Simon – guitar teacher
‘I picked up a guitar for the first time at the age of 8, and I haven’t left it since! I’ve always found that music is able to express what often can’t be told in words, therefore my passion for teaching comes in being able to provide the tools for one other’s self-expression.
I’m an experienced musician with roughly 3 years of private teaching experience. I’ve taught at any level, from total beginner to music university exam preparation, always achieving great results and happiness from the student side. Lessons are tailored to the students’ needs and musical tastes, creating a positive environment and enhancing the learning process.
On top of teaching, I’m an active musician in the Brighton area. With over a hundred performances in originals and function bands, I’ve also worked as a session musician. Currently, I’m active in the bands Demure and Aren Drift, also covering the role of artist director, producer and main songwriter of the starting one.’ Simon… more to follow

Jason – guitar and music tech teacher
Jason has been playing the guitar for about 25 years and has performed at numerous festivals around the UK and has toured internationally. He holds degrees from Southampton and Sussex Universities: Music (BA HONS) and Music and Sonic Media (MA distinction), where his focus was composition and music production. Currently, he co-runs a Brighton-based experimental music night, record label and radio show and is set to begin a PhD in music composition later this year.
Jason teaches guitar, composition and music production and his lessons are designed around the needs and aspirations of each student. He believes that guitar study in the folk and popular traditions should be based on improvising, writing one’s own parts and playing by ear – rather than reading and memorisation. So he encourages students to start immediately, playing basic solos and writing riffs from the first lesson! Lessons are held at his home studio in Brighton Marina or over Zoom and lessons at the student’s house are possible depending on time and location.

Rania – saxophone teacher
Rania has been teaching saxophone in Brighton for five years, to students of all ages and abilities… ‘Have you dreamt for a while to play your favourite tunes on the saxophone? Do you want to improve your sound and technique to play in a band? Or are you preparing for an exam/competition and need some support?
I am a saxophonist with a French diploma in music. I have received first prize in the wind section at the Flaine international competition in France and have been awarded a music scholarship by the University of Sussex twice. I have also played in numerous bands and performed in various countries.
Playing an instrument is not an easy task. It takes time and hard work but my role as a teacher is to make this enjoyable, fun and rewarding. Even as a beginner, you can create something beautiful. Music is such a wonderful thing to learn and share with others and seeing my students grow into musicians is something I feel truly passionate about.’

Lennie – piano teacher
Entering his 2nd year at Oxford University, Leonard is studying for a BA in Music, with a focus on composition and performance. Starting playing classical piano at 5, he has entered a variety of musical activities throughout his education. Picking up the French Horn a few years later, he is now a graduate of the Royal College of Music Junior Department as well as playing in multiple orchestras and bands at his local music foundation and youth orchestra. In recent years, this involved guiding the younger students through pieces and supporting sections. In studying for his degree at Oxford, he has found a new passion for piano and teaching, hoping to guide new students through their early musical journey, just as many teachers had done for him in the past.

Arthur – piano teacher
I am a self taught full time musician; my credentials are; that I have been playing music for a long time, and loving music for a long time.
Over my years in music, I sought direct advice & wisdom from leading names in the industry such as Jools Holland & Jon Cleary. I believe strongly in a self propelling, intuitive approach to learning music, that never gets tedious; and only encourages further joy and appreciation for your instrument, or voice.
Rather than demonstrating short-cuts, I endeavour to show students an in depth approach to improvisation and playing by ear (which can be taught!).
How to have fun doing it? By learning all of your favourite tunes from the radio; arranging piano for a song you’ve written; or even transcribing the most virtuoso jazz piano solos from the 1930s. With constructive use of music theory & ear training, I can carry you forward into passionate playing, and/or a fulfilling music career.

Joseph – piano teacher
Joseph is a pianist, educator and composer currently based in Oxford. He received a scholarship to study piano under Philip Fowke and Penelope Roskell as well as composition under Deirdre Gribbin at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2015, graduating in 2019 with a first- class bachelor’s degree with honours. Joseph teaches in a manner that is personal to each individual. His aim is to work with his students at their own pace to cultivate the needed skills at the instrument and beyond. At the heart of the teaching is the importance of musical communication with the belief that that is fundamentally the core of technique. In addition to aspects taught in graded syllabuses such as scales, sight reading etc., Joseph encourages personal musical exploration and expression to allow his students to find their musical selves. Often, a broadening of awareness to the nuts and bolts of music and therefore an opportunity to further grasp the deeper meanings of it comprises his work.
Joseph has have played in several venues including Cadogan Hall, New College, Oxford, the Denis Arnold Hall, Oxford, 49 Queen’s Gate Terrace (South Kensington) for the Vernon Ellis Foundation, St. Alfege Church and the Old Royal Naval College. One of his passions in repertoire lies with contemporary music. Joseph commissioned a work by composer Caitlin Harrison for a recital in May 2019, recorded music for Robert Saxton and has frequently played new works by young composers for auditions to the national colleges of music and composition competitions. Despite this however, Joseph also feels at home when performing staple repertoire such as Bach, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Some of his more recent performances include participating in the Oxford Chamber Music Festival with violinist Marie Schreer and accompanying for New College music students. Joseph is principle organist at the Glyme Valley churches, where he also regularly sings as a countertenor. Joseph has previously sung as a choral scholar at Exeter College Chapel Choir, Oxford.

Stefan – violin and piano teacher
Stefan is an experienced teacher with pupils of all ages and abilities, having graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with a BMus (Hons) in violin performance, and further study under Diana Cummings FRAM, Simon Smith and Nic Fallowfield.
Stefan started studying at Birmingham Conservatoire with Nic Fallowfield and was awarded an entrance scholarship as well as being one of only five students to receive the Leverhulme Trust scholarship from my year group. Prior to this he had received an award from the John W R Taylor Memorial Trust Fund which is given to exceptional instrumental students from Staffordshire. He then continued to study with Diana Cummings (professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music) who is one of the UK’s most eminent violinists and teachers.
As well as teaching he is also a professional freelance violinist performing mainly throughout the Midlands, Oxfordshire and London. He has performed with several orchestras, chamber orchestras and string quartets throughout the country and internationally.
______
‘Before moving to Birmingham to study at the Conservatoire I had many regular violin, piano and theory pupils covering all ages and abilities. I have helped coach group sessions in violin teaching for schools as well as taking several string group sessions and quartet rehearsals for younger students.
I currently have a great mix of pupils of all ages and abilities from across Oxford. Previously, I worked for a music service where I taught in primary, secondary schools and colleges based in Cheshire and Staffordshire for three years, alongside my own private pupils, before moving to Oxford. As part of working for a Music Service I provided class instrumental teaching as part of the ‘Wider Opportunity’ initiative.
I have experience teaching the exam syllabuses of the ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall and have had successes all the way through to Grade 8 and beyond. I have also had students join some of the major youth orchestras in the country, such as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Youth Orchestra), National Youth String Orchestra and National Children’s Orchestra. I also have had others who are now studying music in some of the top universities in the country.
Many of my students have achieved prestigious music scholarships and exhibitions to schools both locally and nationally such as Magdalen College School, Oxford High School, Abingdon School, Winchester and Eton. I have also had many students who have been offered places at prestigious junior music departments nationally and internationally such as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Guildhall School of Music, Royal Academy and the Julliard school in New York. I also prepare students at universities such as Oxford Brookes and Oxford University for their final recitals and performances.
Enjoyment is the key to quick and efficient learning especially at a young age. Developing the ear, sense of rhythm, musical personality as well as teaching the instrument itself is paramount in making a rounded and versatile musician which therefore enables the student to try all sorts of new things. This ultimately will let people fully enjoy what they are learning and playing, especially if they are learning for fun. I ensure my lessons are tailored to each pupil and am happy to teach people violin, piano and/or theory who are eager to learn just for enjoyment, or are keen to take the graded music exams. I like to make my lessons balanced between performance and musicianship to enable my pupils to be rounded and confident musicians.’

Susie – Piano teacher, accompanist and performance coach
We’re so excited to welcome Susie onto our team! She is a highly experienced collaborative pianist whose regular partnership with Roderick Williams OBE has brought her national recognition. Having always combined the mentoring of the younger generation alongside her performing career, Susie now has more space to consider new projects with intermediate and advanced musicians, looking to enhance and hone their performing and collaborative skills, be they pianists, singers or instrumentalists.
‘Pianist Susie Allan is appreciated as one of today’s most perceptive accompanists. Her poetry at the keyboard has established her in collaborations with significant voices including Emma Bell, Sophie Daneman, Susan Gritton, Nathan Berg, Rowan Pierce, Jonathan McGovern, Mark Padmore, and Roderick Williams.
Susie is recognised throughout the UK as a guest artist of the major concert societies and prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, and at festivals including the Buxton, Endellion, Oxford Lieder and Three Choirs Festivals. She has made numerous appearances for BBC Radio 3 and for television including Proms Extra, and she played for the ‘Schubert Shorts’ Channel 4 series with Christopher Maltman and Claron McFadden.
Susie’s long-standing musical partnership with Roderick Williams stretches over twenty years. In an exploration of the three Schubert song cycles, a tour of Scwhanengesang, illustrated with poetry readings by Jenny Agutter, took them both sides of the Atlantic from New York City’s Park Avenue Armory to the Sam Wanamaker Theatre, London. Of her 2019 appearance at the Chipping Campden Festival John Quinn, of Seen and Heard International, highlighted that “..there is an added something when his recital partner is Susie Allan. There seems to be a special musical chemistry between these two perceptive artists….” In 2022 for the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth the duo performed at The Wigmore Hall, LSO St Luke’s, Bath Mozart Fest and Malvern Concert Club. The duo further collaborated in 2023 including for the Shropshire Music Trust.
An impressive discography of song repertoire on the SOMM Recordings label for which Susie has received high praise includes a debut disc, Severn & Somme, with Roderick Williams, noted by BBC Music Magazine as “revelatory”. “This present performance features not only beautiful singing but also what I can only describe as rapt piano playing by Susie Allan, with every chord and note perfectly weighted and placed”, describes Susie’s contribution in Celebrating English Song (2017) which followed. Their third disc released in 2020 explores the songs of Arthur Somervell about which Gramophone magazine commented “Superbly partnered by Susie Allan (whose deft touch and ingratiating tone are a constant source of pleasure)”. Susie‘s next disc released in 2022 for SOMM Recordings is of Stanford’s Children’s Songs collaborating with mezzo Kitty Whately and baritone Gareth Brynmor John.
Susie has accompanied masterclasses of many luminaries including Sir Thomas Allen, Elly Ameling, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Elisabeth Söderström and Roger Vignoles and at important musical institutions including the Britten-Pears School. Professor of Accompaniment at the Royal College of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama she was a former student of the Guildhall School herself. Susie derived much inspiration from her teachers and mentors including Paul Hamburger, Martin Isepp, Graham Johnson and Iain Burnside. She is recipient of the GSMD Accompaniment Prize, the Gerald Moore Award and a Geoffrey Parsons Memorial Award. She recently adjudicated the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s English Song Prize.’

Eleanor – violin teacher
Eleanor has a music degree from the University of York, a Primary PGCE from the University of Cambridge and has been working in music education for 25 years. She has experience in working with children with dyslexia, ASD and SEMH needs. She loves orchestral playing, leading the Leamington Chamber Orchestra, and her other great passion is chamber music.
Eleanor has also been an experienced, friendly and popular primary classroom teacher. She has been the music lead in several schools, directing beginner string orchestras, recorder and ocarina groups, and playing the piano for assemblies, church services and musical productions.
Eleanor believes that learning the violin should be great fun, encouraging the pupil’s particular strengths and supporting them with their areas to develop. She is a great believer in growth mindset, with experience in Drawing and Talking Therapy, and enjoys building a good working relationship with children and their parents. Although she teaches the violin traditionally, she was a Suzuki violin parent herself so is familiar with that method too. She is reliable, efficient, resourceful and versatile and even the most shy violinists have flourished under her care. She is very happy to accompany pupils for music exams and to incorporate aural test practice too.

Aida. Piano teacher.
Aïda is an active concert pianist and the recipient of over 20 awards at international and national piano competitions. A graduate of the prestigious University of Cambridge and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she uses her passion for music and the arts to create ground-breaking and often multidisciplinary concert experiences. She has performed in 11 countries, and her work has been the object of several television and radio profiles.
Aïda has 10 years of experience teaching one-to-one piano lessons, from complete beginners to semi-professional students, and from 4-year-olds to senior adults. Under her guidance, some of her students have achieved top prizes at national competitions.
By putting meaning and artistic vision at the heart of her pedagogical practice, she aims to treat her students like the artists that they are, give them the confidence to express themselves authentically, and provide them with the methods to work towards achieving whatever dreams they may have.
“In my lessons, we will approach music as a living thing, and a source from which we can learn more about ourselves and the world. I often bring up concepts from psychology and neuroscience, music theory, literature, philosophy, history, drama, and more, to help contextualise what we are trying to achieve as pianists and musicians.”
“I was lucky to have amazing teachers that made me leave my lessons bright-eyed, excited, and inspired. My objective is to replicate this with my students.”

Charlotte – Piano and violin teacher
Charlotte is a recent Master’s graduate in Music Teaching from University of Chichester Conservatoire, soon after completing her BA (Hon) in the same field. She is a classically trained pianist and violinist, attaining Grade 8 in both, as well as Grade 5 Theory. Having played both for 18 years due to her early love of music, her Mauritian/Irish background and culturally enriched upbringing in the Middle East and Northern Ireland has spanned her across the globe already with her performance and learning. She is versatile in all genres in which she plays and teaches, ranging from Baroque to Benny Goodman!
Over the last four years, Charlotte has been a key and valued member of a very active and performance-based music department. This has taken her to Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival performing to star-studded crowds with the Sleepy Lagoon Orchestra. She swaps her violin for keyboard, playing with its smaller function band, Sleepy Lite – appearing at private and public events regularly. Charlotte also enjoys being part of theatre pit bands and staged productions. She continues to play with international and local symphonic orchestras across West/East Sussex.
Charlotte has a passion for musical outreach and making music education accessible. She promotes a motivated and creative environment for her students and tailors each lesson according to the students skill and ability. She believes a solid technical foundation and a collaborative approach results in a successful outcome overall. Whether it be as a hobby, perform for a concert or to be exam-ready. Charlotte encourages exploration in improvisation, ensemble work and overall enjoyment, but firmly believes sightreading is invaluable and weaves this into lessons regularly. Charlotte looks forward to her relocation to Hove, East Sussex to continue her teaching and is looking forward to working with tomorrow’s bright talent!”

Charlotte – Cello teacher
Charlotte was born into a family of musicians in London. She began to play the cello aged four, and by the age of seven commenced her studies at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Selma Gokcen. In adulthood, Ms. Gokcen also mentored Charlotte in methods of pedagogy.
Charlotte was passionate about music from an early age and became an active participant in numerous orchestras and chamber music projects throughout her youth. She partook in countless concerts and masterclasses having the great fortune to play to cellists such as Bernard Greenhouse, Lluís Claret, Francis Gouton and Truls Mørk.
By the age of ten, Charlotte had already performed throughout the UK and was accepted to study at the prestigious summer program at Margess International Switzerland.
By fifteen, Charlotte had now performed internationally and was invited to study in Oslo at the Barratt Due Music Institute, before she entered the Norwegian State Academy to study with the world renowned cellist, Truls Mørk.
During her studies in Norway, Charlotte performed extensively throughout Scandinavia as a soloist and chamber musician, and was invited multiple times to play at the Czech embassy, the Swedish Embassy and to the Swedish Royal Family.
After working professionally in Norway, with guest appearances at the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Charlotte returned to London once she had finished her studies.
In London, she performed at the Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room and Cadogan Hall, before attending The Royal Collage of Music to study her masters with Raphael Wallfisch.
After years of performing as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the UK, Charlotte gained a first class degree in Psychoanalysis and developed a keen interest in the subject of music as language within a feminist construct, focusing on the notion of the paradigm which conflicts with the artist mother.
Charlotte now lives with her family in Oxford and teaches in London and her home in New Hinksey.

Aris – Cello and Guitar teacher
Aris is a multi-instrumentalist offering teaching for cello and electric guitar. He began learning cello at age 6 learning under William Bruce at the Guildhall School of Music, achieving distinction in both ARSM and DipABRSM diplomas of cello performance. He has also recently completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Oxford University.
Over the years Aris has gained orchestral experience from the National Children’s Orchestra, Cavatina Orchestra, Oxford University Orchestra, and touring with the National Youth String Orchestra. In 2022 he appeared alongside violist Jaren Ziegler in the 2022 BBC Young Musician semi final, and has performed in venues such as the Barbican, Bridgewater Hall Manchester, Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square and the Holywell Music Room. He is looking forward to teaching across all ages and styles, passing on the wisdom and inspiration of his teachers to the next generation of budding cellists.
Unlike cello, Aris takes a more tailored approach to guitar teaching. As a more modern instrument, there very few rulebooks on how to play – it’s a blank canvas for everyone! He teaches students by developing their own styles alongside their musical interests and tastes, acoustic and electric.
Aris enjoyed a myriad of genres such as jazz, indie and rock and metal throughout his school years. He now performs guitar with several function bands across Oxford and has played in venues such as The Roundhouse, The Camden Assembly, The Lexington and several gigs at the Bullingdon. His indie-folk band Iris and Steel recently opened for George Ezra at Latitude Festival 2023. Currently he is focusing on recording his solo alternative rock work under the moniker Mount St. Helen.

Henry – Piano and keyboard teacher
Henry is a grade 8 pianist, and the band he plays in (‘Barbara’) have toured with Paul Weller, The Divine Comedy and Haircut One Hundred.
Learning the piano can be approached in different ways: you might decide that you want to learn to read music, ie the notes on the stave, perhaps because you want to take the examinations and achieve the grades, but alternatively you may want to learn the names and the shapes of the chords instead so that you can play your favourite pop and rock songs (and perhaps even write your own…). Both these approaches have their benefits, and I am very comfortable with either. The important thing is to tailor the lessons to suit the way the student wants to learn, and that’s why I will always make a point of discussing these different approaches with the student – or the student’s parent(s) – before we start.

Peter – piano teacher
‘I passed my Grade 8 piano exam in school and continued to study piano performance alongside composition at the University of Surrey. I have been teaching full time in schools for the last two years so I have considerable experience teaching students ranging from absolute beginners up to Grade 8 level and have coached many students through grade exams. I also enjoy teaching pop music and am a singer and guitarist myself so am always keen to jam along with my students.
I believe it is very important to learn music you want to learn so I base my lessons around each individual student’s preferences while taking into account their strengths and weaknesses and what specific aspects of their playing will benefit most from special attention. Grades can be a great way to inspire and challenge students but I don’t consider them essential – as long as a student is inspired to practice at home every week then swift progress will surely follow!’

Massimo – piano teacher
Music has been a constant source of joy and fulfilment throughout Massimo’s life. He has played the piano from an early age and completed his studies in Italy. In England, he has focused on the study of historical keyboard instruments (harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano) as well as on matters of performance practice at postgraduate level.
Massimo regards music as one of the highest expressions of humanity for its ability to delight, nourish and move both the performer and the listener.
‘I love making music, whether as a soloist, as an accompanist, in a chamber music setting or as an orchestral player, but I also cherish the challenge to transmit my passion for it to students of all abilities and to aid them to discover the great wealth of repertoire that the piano has to offer. It always strikes me how musicians have a profound understanding of their own and others’ human nature, which is refined through practice, understanding and shared playing experience. I simply could not imagine living in a world without music.’
